Conor, Cheap Whore, Was Right

Editor:

Last week a student from another college claimed that I willfully misrepresented the facts in a news story about Pat Buchanan's speech at CMC's Pickford Auditorium. More specifically, she noted that my story said that activists were chanting during the time Buchanan was speaking; she claimed that in actuality protestors waited to start chanting until after the end of Buchanan's address as the audience was exciting the auditorium.

In fact, protestors were chanting loudly as Buchanan was speaking. The doors to the auditorium were closed so that the audience could hear Buchanan above the voices of the protestors that chanted outside. My news story was absolutely accurate. And I can back up my reporting.

Sure of my reporting, I asked around to collaborate my account of the events after the charges of bias and misrepresentation were leveled against me. I found that Gary Scott, the city beat reporter for the Claremont Courier who covered the same event, recalled the circumstances as I did. Furthermore, the write up in the Claremont Courier about Buchanan's speech indicates that the chanting began before Buchanan finished speaking. All other truthful recollections of those who attended the speech will reflect the same pattern of events.

Sincerely,

Conor Friedersdorf, News Editor
