Buchanan Speaks at CMC
by Conor Friedersdorf

Pat Buchanan heard the raucous cheers of supporters and the boos and insults of critics before speaking a word at Claremont McKenna College's Pickford Auditorium last Thursday. Beyond voicing strong opinions with respect to Buchanan, the divided audience had little in common. Go to article

Two student-faculty committees, formed to incorporate student input into the 2001-2002 renovation of Frary Hall, met on Wednesday and Sunday of this past week. Swing Votes Swapped
by Nathan Fisher
A&F Associate

Amid concern nationwide that "a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush," at least four web sites are offering to connect would-be voters for Ralph Nader in so-called "swing states" with Al Gore supporters in so-called "safe states," so that they might informally agree to exchange their votes. I Am a Bitch
I am a bitch. According to a certain "Bitch Test" administered by a certain website, I rate 39%, which is 1% above the average. While I embrace this ascription, I regard it as a culturally contingent one. It's probably one of the most interesting words out there. Go to article

God Speed You Black Emperor
Through the ages, Canada has forced upon our fair nation a great many musical plagues, most notably Alanis Morrissette. Not only did Ms. Morrisette scoff at American culture by shattering Boston's long-standing record for the best-selling debut album of all time, she also belittled the Christian faith by claiming enough resemblance to God to portray Him/Her in a terrible, terrible film. When the Pomona-Pitzer men's soccer team faced off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on a crisp, sunny Wednesday afternoon, there was a great deal at stake. With a one-point lead in SCIAC standings going into the game, Pomona-Pitzer needed either a win or tie to capture the division title. Also at stake was an automatic bid to the postseason for the SCIAC champ. Go to article

Women Take Third in SCIAC
The women's Soccer team sprinted to a magnificent and appropriate conclusion to their excellent 2000 season. The team defeated La Verne last Friday, effacing historical superstition and precedence to establish a new and more robust tradition of women's soccer at Pomona-Pitzer. Go to article

Pomona's Dating Scene is Ambiguity
I've seemed to find a consensus among students at Pomona, definitely at least with freshmen. The dating scene here is a little strange. It's just weird. There really is no dating. The vast scope of romantic involvements seem to hover around three central themes: random drunken hook-ups, ambiguously prolonged hook-ups, and seemingly "married couple" relationships. Supreme Court Should Be Psychedellic
As much as I love and repect Ralph Nader - and who among us does not have the full text of Unsafe at Any Speed tattooed on her back in near-microscopic print? - I have finally decided to swallow my bile and vote for Albert Gore. Go to article

Pomona Should Not Villify Essig
In the wake of the terrifying and unnerving events of this last Monday night involving Professor Fred Sontag and Jared Essig, we must be extremely careful as we, the student body and faculty, commit the episode to memory. Those who know all the facts of the matter are few, including the various newspapers writing stories on the issue, and it would be terribly wrong to vilify Jared as conscious and malicious in his actions toward Professor Sontag.
