I sat in front of a blank screen in the newspaper office, trying to write my final letter from the editor last night as the rest of the college congregated to celebrate the semester’s end outside of our doors; many were in fact inside the office. The entire college, along with all of the current events in my life, it seemed, had conspired against me with an impenetrable army of pressure. I couldn’t write a word. Go to Letter

Tree Maintenance a Top Priority

Just as airplane crashes on the news make us more sensitive to the perils of flying, a tragedy such as that of two years ago makes us more cognizant in our daily lives of the dangers inherent in the very trees that make our campus so beautiful and livable. Go to Letter

WSC’s Actions Were Hypocritical

I am writing to express my extreme disgust at the behavior of the student "protestors" who have disrupted the life of our college by positioning themselves around Alexander Hall for the last two days. Go to Letter

Stanley Guilty of Acting in Bad Faith

In view of your and President Massey’s response to the recent nonviolent protests organized by the Worker Support Committee of the Claremont Colleges and attended by legions of concerned students, faculty, and staff, I can repress no longer my mounting frustration and rage at the cold apathy displayed by the colleges’ administrations towards the well-being of the most industrious members of its community. ASPC Presses For WSC Amnesty

The ASPC Senate passed the following statement this morning as our official position on possible actions taken against the WSC protestors at Alexander Hall.  Although the lockdown is over, we want to convey our position to the student body... Go to Letter

Jewish Jokes, Defenses, "Stupid"

I cannot believe how stupid and offensive David Roth’s Letter From the Editor in last week’s paper was. Roth sought to defend the Jewish jokes contained in the joke issue by saying that "Jews have always cherished their sense of humor." What kind of an idiotic generalization is that? Go to Letter

Trees Aren’t People, Silberstein Is

First, a response to Kevin Bigham’s April 28, 2000 Letter to the Editor. Second, a response to Jon Vanasco’s article, "Recent Campaigns Show Campus Politics to be a Bit Fishy." Go to Letter

Zeppelin’s Still Flying High

Editor:

In Pat Resing’s Letter to the Editor in last week’s paper, he misspelled "Led Zeppelin." He spelled it "Led Zeplin." Jesus, man, don’t fuck with Led Zeppelin! Led Zeppelin is not spelled "Led Zeplin." It’s spelled "Led Zeppelin."

Naturally, the editors did not catch this stupidity. Or, perhaps Resing spelled it right and the editors messed it up, as they tend to do. Either way, I would like to say on behalf of myself, Susie Dudis, and The Dusty Baker Cock Explosion, that TSL and indie rock suck and Zeppelin rules.

Sincerely,

Jason Mandell ‘01

Bingham Brings Brilliant Opinions

Editor:

I would like to thank Kevin Bingham for writing two intelligent and meaningful letters to the editor in last week’s paper. As usual, the only opinions expressed in TSL that were worth reading came from a non-TSL staff member.

Sincerely,

Jason Mandell ‘01

And We Couldn’t Care Less, Either

Editor:

I know this is trivial, but it bugs me, so I though I should just say a few words about it. Incited to riot by a line from Nate Fisher’s article on sports a couple weeks ago, I felt it necessary to point out that "could care less" means absolutely nothing, especially if you’re trying to be scathing by using it. It’s "couldN’T care less," people! As in, I care sooooo little that I could NOT care less. Please, don’t let habit and laziness keep you from changing your ways. I hope that this has helped some of you see the light, and will move you into my corner of the pet peeve ring. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Katie Golus ’01
