What Anti-Semitism Is Not

Among the recent spate of angry responses to the Joke Issue were a few that particularly hurt to read. Calls for Ed Board resignation or ASPC sanction definitely don’t make me feel any better at the end of the day (especially when they involve RECKLESS CAPITALIZATION), but they are nothing compared to Jewish people getting angry at Jewish jokes. Pomona’s Truth Problem

At an academic institution, there is little worse than preventing people from thinking critically and discussing issues. The faculty and administration recognized as much when they made thinking critically about values a part of our distribution requirements. However, the values and cultures we think critically about tend to begin where our gates end; Pomona students are never really encouraged to think critically about Pomona itself. Go to Letter

Editor Misconstrued Editing

There is a big difference between editing and censorship. The implication on last week’s Letters page that I censored Robert Daseler’s article in Pomona College Magazine is simply wrong-headed. In fact, I don’t believe Robert used the word "censor." Go to Letter

Please, Don’t Kill the Eucalyptus

Why is it that when something wrong happens, everyone reacts with violence. A tree fell and now everyone wants to cut down every Eucalyptus tree on campus. I want to point out that the tree mentioned in your article that fell between Clark V and Walker was not a Eucalyptus but a Coast Live Oak, a Southern California native. Go to Letter

Glasgow Rock Worthy of Praises

Let’s cut to the chase here, I think Adam Gram-Silverchair’s ’00 [sic.] musical tastes suck. Suck-ass. If I have to read one more piece about Built to Suck [sic.] in Arts & Features section I am going to have to come back from Glasgow early and make everybody in the A&F section apologize to the whole school for liking crap-rock wankers like "B-T-S". Categorization by Race Misguided

What is race? A species is hard enough to define. A species is supposedly a group of organisms that can successfully breed and have children. IT is not that simple, though. Genetics shows that we are barely different than a chimp and not that much different from a fruit fly. Go to Letter

Horticulturist Defends Care

Editor:

I would like to just inform you that Pomona College does and always had a tree maintenace program for it’s 2,750 trees on campus. You said that I said there was not a maintenace schedule for the tree that fell two years ago. There are people like myself that regularly observe and monitor landscape areas around the pomona college 40 plus hours a week.

To say that there is no reqular maintenance schedule is not being fair to our commitment to making pomona college a beautiful and safe place live or work at. Thank You.

Sincerely,

Ronald D. Nemo

Reader Resents Characterization

Editor:

I am writing in response to the Letter from the Editor on April 21, 2000.

I am not a pussy, a wit or a sweetheart. I consider myself a typical Pomona College student. I am simply apolitical, apathetic, lazy, selfish and spoiled.

Sincerely,

Vi Ha, ’00(?)

PS: I love reading the letters to the editor.
