CCLA
Commissioner of Campus Events Tamara Chellam 00 reported that CCLA has already organized its members responsibilities for the Common show. Tickets are on sale now, and possibly be sold at snack later in the week. After people finish selling Spring Formal tickets, Common show tickets will be sold at lunch and dinner. Volunteers for POW will be able to buy their discounted tickets at the door.
The show costs $4 for volunteers and $10 for the general public.
POW
Community Affairs Commissioner Janelle Lin 00 reported that POW sign-ups are going well. Lin was only expecting 150 people, but so far has had over 350 people sign-up. Residence Hall and Food Commissioner Sam Brenner 00 is working on organizing the barbecue.
Mike Saffitz 02 will be working with the Claremont Police Department to flyer the neighborhood about the possible noise complaints; complaint calls will be routed to Saffitz, in the hopes that complaints can be resolved directly with residents.
Budget Advisory Committee
Vice-President Putnam Shin 00 reported that the Budget Advisory Committee met with President Stanley to talk over their goals for the budget. Their first priority is need-blind admissions. The second priority is having information technologies improved. The cost of tuition is going to increase 4% at Pomona and 8% at Claremont McKenna next year, but CMC will be providing every student and faculty member with a laptop computer.
Organic Garden
Off-Campus Senator Omayra Ortega 00 reported that shes been visiting the Organic Garden, and the members reported that theyd like to be a bigger part of school clubs.
Non-Profit Sector Career Fair
Lin also reported that there is a non-profit sector career fair coming up in the near future.
Budget Requests
Shin also reported that if there are any budget requests remaining for the school year, they need to be submitted ASAP because there are only two more budget committee meetings left.
Annual Budgeting Process
Shin announced that the annual budgeting process for organizations will take place for 5-C organizations this Sunday. The process for Pomona organizations will take place on Saturday.
P.E. Requirement
Academic Affairs Commissioner Sarah Jackel 00 announced that the PE Requirement is being revisited. The Department is looking for more student input and whether students are opposed to the idea or the structure.
TSL Joke Issue
Dean Quinley gave a report on the legal validity of students complaints. The school attorney decided that TSL had First Amendment rights because of a California law that applies to both public and private colleges. Quinley advises that judicial action is not a viable option.
TSL Discussion
There was a discussion in Senate about TSL where the issues of free speech and accountability were debated. Opposing groups both praised and criticized TSL for its attempts at humor. Several students voiced their opinion that student fees should not go towards a defamatory newspaper. TSL staff were on hand to hear complaints, and supporters of TSL rebutted complaints by saying that journalism is protected by free speech. North Campus Senator Robi Ganguly 00 motioned that the Senate should require TSL to solicit jokes from the student-body at large. Sports Commissioner Dan Silberstein 00 seconded the motion. The vote tally was as follows: Yes: 4 No: 9 Abstaining: 1.
