Despite rumors, accusations, and much debate, The Student Life appears to be emerging from recent attacks over the joke issue it published April 1 and accusations of bias in election reporting nearly unscathed. Go to article

Students Travel to DC to Protest IMF

At its meeting on April 7, the faculty approved a motion by the Curriculum Committee to create a new major in Russian and Eastern European Studies. Currently, the Russian Studies department offers a language and literature-based major; the new major will be a more area-based study requiring classes in history, government and politics. Assistant Professor Kevin Platt explained that the new major would prepare students for careers in government and law, especially overseas. He noted that the field was increasing in popularity among college students across the U.S.

In April 7 issue of The Student Life, Lenard Molina ‘02 was named the head of the Irvin Landrum Jr. Justice Student Organizing Committee. Molina, while an outspoken member of the committee, is not the head. The error appeared in an article entitled "Rift Grows Among Landrum Group Members."

We apologize for the error and thank Molina for calling it to our attention.

Australia: Phonetically Similar to Austria
Life in north Queensland is very laid-back. Time flows differently in Australia. It has something to do with its orientation to the sun’s gravitational field and the fact that we’re all walking around upside-down on the underbelly of the world. Go to article

Ariane Guides You to Getting It On
This is the second time this year I’ve been asked to write about sex for The Student Life, and, though reviewing The Goofy Foot Press’s The Guide To Getting It On! was appealing, I must say this task has proven to be no more titillating than the first. Go to article

If Baseball Were Hockey, They’d Have a Hat Trick
The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team’s offense got hot last week, bombarding opponents with runs to win three straight. The Sagehens, who played one game against Chapman and took two from Menlo, won by an average margin of seven points, bringing their overall record to 17-13. They resume conference play against La Verne today. Go to article

Clips Have Nothing to Lose but Losing
What makes this week a particularly rough one for the Clippers is that America’s greatest employer of ex-high school football players with word processing skills, Sports Illustrated, has decided to put the Clippers on the cover. Go to article

Four Phrases You Should Try to Use
Needless to say, all of this put me in a drunkest-guy-at-the-wedding, advice-dispensing kind of mood. So I took the liberty of putting together a list. Here it is– The Top Four Quotes I’ve Heard This Month and How You, Pomona College Student, Can Apply Them To Your Daily Life. Drum roll, please. Go to article

Census Bias Showcases National Racism
Census 2000, however, is not a roundly amusing affair. There are some serious questions about the methodology behind the system. What struck me in particular about the census form was the race section. Go to article

All Joke Issue Staff Should Resign
The first thing that struck me when I read the "joke issue" was the article ridiculing Professor Gaines, partially on the basis of his race. I don’t agree with Professor Gaines’ charges against the college, but I fail to see how what is to some extent a racially-based attack has any place in TSL. Not even as a joke. Go to letter

Professor Enjoyed Being Satirized
Based on the Inland Valley Our Times story, one might draw the incorrect conclusion that I was personally offended by the "expose" in The Student Life. As it turns out, however, I was not offended at all. Unfortunately, the Inland Valley Our Times reporter never sought my opinion regarding the "expose." Go to letter
