TSL Joke Issue
Communications Commissioner Emeka Okereke 00 told Senate that a Print Media Committee (PMC) meeting had been scheduled for Friday, April 7, to deal with concerns and complaints arising from The Student Life joke issue which appeared the previous week.
Discussion shifted to the Editor in Chief selection process. Currently, TSL staff recommendations generally determine who becomes the next Editor in Chief, according to Okereke. He would open up the application process to a wider range of candidates, including those who dont have TSL experience. Still, he would seek a large amount of input from TSL staffers.
South Campus Senator Michio Brunner 03 raised a concern that it would still be the same group of people running the paper.
Dean of Students Ann Quinley said that students had come to her asking for Judiciary Board proceedings to be initiated. She said that she would consult the college lawyer as to whether or not the issue was actionable under the Student Code, but felt that it probably wasnt. Instead, she feels that Senate should choose a response that it feels appropriate.
Budget
Vice President Putnam Shin announced that the Budget Committee had approved $240 for an online publication. They are supposed to publish two or three issues by the end of the semester.
Shin stressed that budget applications for all organizations are due on Friday, and senators in contact with organizations should make sure that they get their applications in on time.
POW
Community Affairs Commissioner Janelle Lin 00 urged senators and students to get involved with Pomona Outreach to the World (POW), a day of service. Participants will receive a free T-shirt and get discounted admission to a show by the Hip Hop act Common.
Off Campus Senator Omayra Ortega 00 and Silberstein agreed to donate old Harwood Halloween and Homecoming t-shirts for middle school children.
Common
Assistant Director of the Campus Center Dave Swenson told Senate that Common would be playing a show at the Wash on April 15. Tickets will cost $10 for the general public and $4 for POW participants.
Ursula Rucker
President Richard Park 00 told Senate that Ursula Rucker tickets are currently available. She will be performing on Friday at Garrison Theatre. He also expressed disappointment, echoed by other senators, with the low levels of flyering for the event.
