Cleaning up East LA

Environmental Affairs Commissioner Aaron Ginoza ’02 announced that he organized a workshop on Environmental Justice with a non-profit East LA group. The workshop was held on Thursday, March 2.

Workin’ For the Weekend

Commissioner of Campus Events Tamara Chellam ’00 gave a report on this weekend’s activities. There will be a Cave Party thrown in conjunction with one of the frats. Chellam also reported that CCLA is still discussing the issue of co-sponsorship with fraternities, who are currently barred from receiving funding for alcohol at non-cosponsored events.

Smiley 80s will take place on Saturday. In the days leading up to Smiley 80s, CCLA will be showing classic teenage films from the period.

Get the Dough Over

Vice President Putnam Shin ’00 reported on the budget requests. He followed that up by giving a brief explanation about how the budget request system works and what factors the budget committee takes into consideration when appropriating funds.

Pomona Still Slow, Obese

Academic Affairs Commissioner Sarah Jackel ’01 reported that the PE Department’s proposal for a new PE Requirement failed to pass the faculty committee.

POW: You Are Not Forgotten

Pomona Outreach to the World is a day of community and volunteering. President Richard Park ’00 felt it would be a good idea to hire Ozomatli to come and play as a reward for the volunteers. Although some senators felt that the volunteers should be able to go to the concert for free, Park was uncomfortable making a commitment before checking into the fiscal feasibility of such a move.

Other senators expressed concern over whether Ozomatli would compete with Outkast for ticket sales. The general consensus was that Ozomatli should be pursued, and other options should be looked into as a precaution.

Speechification

Senate has moved into the final stages of negotiations with two speakers: Wavy Gravy and spoken word artist Ursula Rucker. Park presented several other names to Senate. Senate agreed that Park should pursue Ron Silverman, a producer for The Simpsons as a future speaker.
