Community News Brief

CLAREMONT – LA Superior Court Judge David Yaffe ordered the release of the terms of a 1998 settlement between the City of Claremont and political activist Eli Mellor. Mellor, who claims he was abused by Claremont Police Chief Ralph Dean, offered to waive the terms of the settlement contingent upon the city fully disclosing the involvement of city officials in the case. On February 16, 2000, Richard McKee brought a suit upon the City of Claremont demanding it to make the settlement public. The settlement was released Thursday after the judge’s ruling.

Correction

Last week, in an article entitled "Pomona College Seen as Diverse," The Student Life incorrectly reported that Trustees from Colorado College had visited Overland College. They actually visited Oberlin College in Ohio, which has historical ties to Pomona College.

Colorado College visited Oberlin because of "its academic reputation, production of scholars and deep historical roots in creating diversity on campus by being the first college in the United States to admit Black students," according to Dean of Admissions Bruce Poch, who pointed out the error.

Vote 2000: There’s Room for Jello
Mr. Biafra is clearly more in tune with the American political climate than any one of the four major presidential candidates. No, I do not personally endorse Jello Biafra’s candidacy, but I believe he is doing more good for American politics than Gore, Bush, McCain, or Bradley. Go to article

Fraternity Members Intimidate
Fraternities argue that they should be given access to school alcohol funding because without fraternities, "there would be no social life on campus." Yet they have never questioned whether or not the social life created by fraternities is necessarily good. Go to letter
