Proposition 21 Creates Debate: CCCAP formed to fight initiative

Claremont College students have banded together to fight Proposition 21, forming the Claremont Colleges Coalition Against Prop 21 (CCCAP), in the hope of mobilizing community members and registered five college students against the initiative.Go to article

Assistant Professor of Black Studies and Psychology Stanley Gaines’ contract is due to expire on June 30, 2000. Gaines has filed charges of discrimination and retaliation with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.



On-campus signs supporting Proposition 22, the initiative that would define marriage in California as the union between a man and a woman, were defaced with Irvin Landrum Jr. Justice Organizing Committee flyers this week.

The flyers, advertising the silent march that the Committee conducted Tuesday, were placed over the text of the signs, almost completely obscuring them. Mike Flynn ’02 has accepted partial responsibility. (See page 13)

KSPC 88.7fm, the radio station of the Claremont Colleges, is now webcasting. Listeners now have the ability to tune in the signal online at www.kspc.org.

"In addition to making our signal available worldwide," said Director of College Radio and Television Erica Tyron, "it also makes KSPC available in dorms like Lyon that currently don’t get reception."

The student responsible for the harassing e-mails has been identified, and has admitted wrongdoing in connection to all of the e-mails sent out earlier this month. The student, identified only as a underclassman, has been placed on leave. If he returns, he will face Judiciary Board charges for his actions.

All this poison-brewing and spreading of dissension is circulated primarily around the lower two classes– or so it seems to me; once people earn a little more experience and realize that they’re not so special after all, then Pomona college begins to seem like an all around good idea again.
