King Honored Inside City Hall
Inside the Claremont City Hall this Tuesday, irony, as a friend of mine said, was dripping off the walls. Now Im not sure if irony drips stickily so that it sort of slops down the wall with a slurping sound, or if it surreptitiously slides down the wall: all I heard was that it dripped.

Ad Policy Instituted, Explained
Last week, we inserted an ad in The Student Life that garnered a lot of negative feedback. As is our policy when we receive negative feedback, we discussed the issue as an editorial staff. These discussions have yielded two results.

Harassment is Not Always Hate
I am writing on two issues: first, I will argue that Laura Ephraims e-mail should not have been included in the section of "Harassing E-mails;" second, I would like to address the editorial that Ms. Ephraim wrote regarding the vandalism to her door.Go to Letter
Worthington Contradicts Gaines
In fact, the Deans office, which circulates material in advance of Faculty Meetings at the direction of the elected faculty Executive Committee, did circulate a copy of the grievance policy proposed by Professor Gaines.

Censored Speech is Cowardice
Several issues have surfaced recently that quite frankly call our communitys devotion to free speech into question. The first is the criticism leveled by members of the student body against the publication of The Student Lifes annual joke issue. The second is the inclusion of pro-life advertisements in the most recent issue.

TSL Joke Issues Hypocritical
I havent always disliked TSL. My first two years at Pomona, I respected the newspaper for disseminating information, mostly based on facts, and maintaining a degree of integrity and respectability that should be expected out of a student newspaper.

TSL Lacks Integrity, Objectivity
The joke issues of The Student Life over the last 3 semesters are indefensible examples of what void develops in the absence of all journalistic integrity. Megan Purns letter from the editor and editorial board both attempted to defend these joke issues in last weeks TSL. What follows is a critique of those defenses.

TSL Contradicts Itself, Harrasses
We find it ironic that, after stating that "freedom of expression and press freedom are privileges," in your October 1, 1999 Editorial Board, you continue to argue that you have been given free reign to print whatever you like. Continuing, the editorial says, "Our student newspaper is an open forum for the free expression of opinion, but it is not to be abused as a tool for reckless and malicious purposes." Go to Letter

Pomona College is Not P.C.U.
I have always been under the impression that the fraternity I belong to and the other fraternities on campus are organizations dedicated to providing a festive weekly retreat for all of our fellow Sagehens from the onslaught of endless reading assignments, essays and lab reports.Go to Letter
Midwesterner Defends Hip-Hop
This letter was inspired and is in response to last weeks article entitled "Why Hip-Hop Sucks in 2000..." written by one Mike Gaertner. Well Michael, you made some interesting points in your article in regards to how hip-hop may appear to, in fact, "suck in 2000."

Weekend Events Lack Imagination
Now, to be fair, there are more events going on at Pomona than in the past, simply because of the organization within CCLA that exists now as opposed to what was there in previous years. So, if thats the case, why does nothing worthwhile ever happen? Go to Letter
Stereotyping: A Two-Way Street
A bitter tone ran throughout Adam Graham-Silvermans article "Pomona Senior Pleads Tenderness" (TSL 2/11/00), an unfortunate result of missed opportunities, failed expectations and a trend of consuming hatred that lurks on Pomonas campus.

Sorry For Using Yes on 22 Signs
I want to first say that these signs were taken by students with no affiliation to the Landrum Student Committee and were waiting to be disposed of. I decided it would be a good idea to use the sign structures for their physical practicality. Go to Letter
Smith Bells Toll Elitist Tune. Bad!
I am told by Spencer Wilson to register with [Dean Quinley] my complaints regarding the Frary courtyard bells. As a CMC student, I often do not hear them when they chime, especially the hymns at morning, noon, and supper times. This just goes to show the elitism of Pomona College.
