Men’s Swimming Takes Dive Despite Strong Performances

This past Saturday, the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team squared off against the Stags of CMS. The Hens walked across Sixth Street to the briny Axelrose Pool with their heads held high. Facing a considerably larger team, the Hen’s were defeated 150-88, but did not go down without putting up a fight.

Once again, the small number of Sagehen swimmers plagued the team. This lack of depth proved too much for the Hens to overcome but did not prevent Ben Komer PI ’02 from catching wreck like it was going out of style. Komer placed first in both the 50(:21.85) and 100(:48.74) yard freestyle events. Other impressive performances were put up by Dan "Dr. Octagon" Hekman ’03, who placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.90, and senior diver Matt Smart who owned the 1M and 3M diving events.

This finished the dual meet season for the Hens, who posted a record of 4-2 in SCIAC competition and 7-2 overall. Despite the loss, seniors Smart, Leo Tanaka, Torrin Hultgren and Roozbeh Houshyar finished out their dual meet careers as Hens appreciating the fact that they’d never again have to enter the brackish waters of CMS. Looking forward to the close of the season, Tanaka added, "SCIACs is when it all comes together." This weekend, the Hens’ divers are off to the SCIAC Diving Prelims in Cerritos. The rest of the SQUOD will join them February 17-19 for the SCIAC Championship Meet.
