Forged E-mails Harass Students

A number of underclass women were recently targeted with a barrage of more than 20 e-mails containing racist, sexist and spiteful messages. The messages, which ranged in content from calling a head sponsor "stupid" to asking African American students to participate in an interracial orgy, were sent out last Friday and Saturday. The person or people responsible for the e-mails have yet to be identified. [con't]


Recall Petition Delivered to City

The Irvin Landrum Jr. Justice Organizing Committee is now actively seeking the recall of not only Mayor Karen Rosenthal, but also City Councilman Algrid Liega, who was mayor when Irvin Landrum Jr. was killed on January 11,1999; a formal petition for their removal will be circulated on the February 14.

"We think that we have gained a sufficient number of signatures to move forward with the recall [of Rosenthal and Liega]," Claremont Resident Mike Warshaw said. "You will be hearing from us again in the coming weeks." [con't]


Proposition 22 Garners Student, QRC Response

The addition of Proposition 22 to the March 7, 2000 California Primary ballot has raised concern among students about the rights of homosexual couples to a legal marriage.

Written by California State Senator William J. "Pete" Knight, Proposition 22 is referred to as the "Protection of Marriage Initiative" by supporters and as the "Limit on Marriage Initiative" by opponents. The proposition is only 14 words long: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." [con't]


Survey Shows Abundance of Pomona Binge Drinkers

In a survey released last week to the faculty of the six colleges, the Claremont University Center (CUC) reported that "32 percent of Claremont Colleges students, in 1999, reported one or more episodes of binge drinking in the last two weeks." Binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks in a row.

This statistic, however, is less than the national average of 43 percent, as determined by a 1997 survey of 130 colleges by the Harvard School of Public Health. The Claremont Colleges have declined to say whether or not they participated in the study. [con't]

On Wednesday, February 7 at 13:27, Frary staff reported the theft of several items, among them four walkie-talkies, a food processor and some alcohol. Security was unable to locate. [con't]


Senate Briefs

South Campus Representative Robi Ganguly ’00 spoke about upcoming plans for sport-related activities. Ganguly helped to organize this year’s Ski and Beach Day, which will take place Saturday, February 26th. The cost will be $20, and the trip will begin at the Mountain High ski resort, followed by a trip to the beach. Sign-ups are going on now. [con't]


News Briefs

Nick Lewis ’02, Laura Rosen ’01 and Brian Schwartz ’01 were all named Head Sponsors for the 2000-2001 Academic Year on Monday, February 7. Dean of Students Ann Quinley, one administrators who works closely with the sponsors, said that these three showed an "excellent group dynamic." She was, "As always, super-sad for a couple of people, but also very impressed." This is the first time in a number of years where two of three Head Sponsors have been male. [con't]

George James has been a cook at Frary since 1989. He both planned and prepared the menu for the Black History month dinner, which included carved pork loin, blackened chicken breast and fried catfish.
