Senate Briefs By Aaron Kim & Dan Check News Associate & News Editor Senate approved a request for funds to bring Wavy Gravy to campus. Gravy is a well known hippie whose credits include emceeing the original Woodstock Festival. He is currently touring as a comic and actor. Commissioner of Campus Events Tamara Chellam 00 is continuing her attempts to bring southern rap act Outkast to campus. They have been having trouble securing Big Bridges, as the Claremont University Center, who book the venue, are often reluctant to book shows that are not seated in nature. According to Neil Gerard, the decision is based upon damage sustained at previous shows, and not the fact that Outkast is a hip hop act per se. Commissioner of Community Affairs Janelle Lin 00 discussed the CAC Future of Liberal Arts Education lecture series. Consisting of faculty speakers and student panels, the series will deal with the curriculum and technology of Pomona College. Heal-the-Bay beach clean up day will take place this Saturday. Vice President Putnam Shin 00 presented the requests that came before the budget committee the previous week. Volleyball and paintball both requested funds, as did ACT, for the Bernard Field Station. Additionally, there were six requests for money from the alcohol fund. The Senate Retreat, on which the Senators went camping and sea kayaking, was considered to be fun by all. Director of the Campus Center Neil Gerard spoke about a pending liquor license application. ARAMARK had applied for the license to allow them to serve beer and wine in the Sagehen Cafe. Gerard described the administrations preparation for the town hall meeting in which the application would be discussed. A task force assigned by the City to review the application issued a recommendation that the application be denied. Michael Lieberman 01 introduced himself as the new ASPC Webmaster. In addition to redesigning the site to make it more user friendly, he also wants to make a several substantive additions. First, Lieberman plans to create an interactive events calendar. Students would be able to submit events to the calendar, and, once approved, they would be browsable and searchable by web users. Lieberman also hopes to add an interactive message board to stimulate discussion between students and senators, and a ride board, for those who need transportation, especially around break times.
