Activists Must Learn Some Respect

Editor:

There has obviously been great upset in the Claremont community over the Landrum incident, which has intensified of late due to the awards being made to the officers involved. It has been encouraging to see college students becoming involved in the campaign for an inquiry, giving some of the college community interaction that the administration is so desperate for.

However, there comes a point where campaigning for justice is taken too far. Do these students believe they are crusaders? Sure, I would be more than happy to sign one of their protest letters–I actually agreed with the entire document–but I changed my mind once the "protester" began to accost my friend. For five minutes he stood over her, persistently asking why she wouldn’t sign, refusing to accept her answers. They need to learn quickly that they will not get signatures that way–and they’re the ones who want free speech?

I’m really positive towards their contribution to the case, but these are serious matters and need more mature handling than lunchtime harassments.

Sincerely,

Sarah Bird ‘03
